Do you find it hard sometime to stay positive?  As creative artists, we are bombarded with negative messages on a daily basis.  How many times has someone told your artistic dream was impractical or worse yet, impossible?

Although we all know it is important to keep a positive attitude, it is often easier said than done.  Here are a few of the techniques I use when I feel myself becoming discouraged:

1) Remind myself of how far I've come

Sometimes I'll even sit down and make a list of all the things I've accomplished in the past month or two.  When I do this I am often surprised how many things I had forgotten about until I made the list.  A trick with this is not only to list the big accomplishments, but the smaller victories as well.  After all, those smaller victories mount up in time.

2) Remind myself that I am unique and so is my journey

Sometimes it is easy to become envious of others.  But each of us is unique with a unique gift to offer the world. If you are truly doing what you are put here to do, it can never be duplicated.

And last, but certainly not least, sometimes you just need to let yourself wallow in self-pity for a while.  Feel the discouragement or whatever it may be.  Scream, holler, kvetch a little.  This is why the Blues was invented - a beautiful and healing art form that allows us to transcend out problems by singing about them.
Don't stay in the doldrums too long, however.  Once you've had a good sulk, it's time to get back on the good foot and go make some art.
